Drone UK – by FPV UK – is the UK national association for recreational drone flyers. The association was formed in 2009 and now represents more than 7,000 members, and counting!
Membership benefits include:
- £5m Public Liability Insurance. Our specialist £5m drone public and products liability insurance gives you, and landowners and event organisers, peace of mind that you’re covered in case of an accident.
- Article 16 Operational Authorisation. Our CAA Article 16 Operational Authorisation enables all of our members to safely fly in more places, and closer to uninvolved people than ever before.
- Plastic Membership Card (Optional). With this credit card sized membership card, it is easy to demonstrate that you’re qualified, permitted and insured. Ideal if you’re challenged by the Police or a member of the public, and for flying at drone events.
- Automatic CAA Registration (Optional). Have us register you with the CAA, and renew your CAA Operator registration automatically through our direct CAA link.
- Detailed Drone UK handbook. Our CAA-approved handbook gives specific advice on how to safely operate your drone in all sorts of scenarios and what to do if you have a problem.
- Drone UK Certificate of Competency: Drone Law. This simple online theory test is recognised by the CAA as proof of competency – equivalent to the DMARES test (which gives you a Flyer ID). The Drone UK CofC: Drone Law questions are tailored for association members.
- Drone UK Certificate of Competency: Practical achievement scheme. The Drone UK Certificate of Competency: Practical is a hands-on flying achievement which gives members the chance to improve their practical skills and flying confidence. We have more than 30 mentors and examiners around the country, and counting!

History
The association was formed in 2009 to champion and protect the hobby/ sport of FPV (first person view) flying and successfully persuaded the CAA to issue an exemption for FPV flying in 2009. The provisions of this FPV exemption were renewed every year until 2021 – when they were rolled into EU and UK law.
Our members fly all kinds of drones and radio control models for recreation.
We welcome everyone and everything; whether you have a tiny Tello, an expensive Inspire 2, a super fast 250 racing quad, or a beautiful balsa wood scale model, and whether you fly it by line of sight, or FPV (using video goggles to fly from the first person view, as if you are sitting in the aircraft).
